Beaver Scouts are young people usually aged between 6 and 8 years old. They belong to the first and youngest Section in the Scouting family. Young people can join Beaver Scouts in the three months leading up to their 6th birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cub Scouts, after their 8th birthday.

We usually meet once a week as a "Colony" during school term time. The Colony is run by trained, voluntary leaders and helpers. Sue Sibbald has been a Beaver Leader for over 15 years, she is helped by a number of Beaver Scouts' parents.

Beavers meet on a Wednesday evening in the Scout Hall in Port Edgar from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

There is a fee of £12 per term, with 3 terms a year, and the Beavers are encouraged to bring along 20p each week. This cost however, covers all activities done during Colony sessions. From time to time there are extra events put on by the District and a small fee may be charged for these. In the "What Do They Do" Section, there is a small list of recent District events that proved popular.

What do they do?

Beavers partake in numerous activities, those of which include;

  • playing games
  • beavers character group

  • meeting new friends
  • gaining badges
  • going on outings and visits
  • going outside and learning about the outdoors

Beaver Scout activities are a combination of learning and having fun. They find out about life in other countries and explore through organised activities. A varied programme is run so that Beavers can sample different aspects of life. Activities within the Colony that have proved popular in the past include;

  • Games Night. Especially football and uni-hoc
  • Camp Skills. The Beavers learned how to cook on stoves and pitch a tent.
  • beavers cooking

  • Fire Station visit.
  • Sponsored Walk. Beavers and Cubs walk from Queensferry to Kirkliston.
  • Easter Evening. Beavers bring along a boiled egg to decorate and roll down a hill.
  • Christmas Party. With a visit from Santa!

Along with Colony events, the District also organises events for Beavers. Beavers from all over Edinburgh attend and these events have been a tremendous success. Recent events include;

  • Animal Man. Beavers were introduced to a variety of exotic and everyday animals.
  • Magic Man. A magician performed a variety of illusions and tricks.
  • Centenary Camp. A fun filled day in Dalmeny Estate to celebrate Scouting's 100th Birthday.
  • End Of Year Camp. A celebration to signify the end of Scouting's 100th year.
